Linking social and physical regeneration can be complex. This section looks at how we plan to build social and economic bridges, especially looking at job opportunities and equality. We have looked at a variety of schemes to make sure local communities benefit from the scheme.

Design Ideas

Floating Islands

Using The Floating Gardens case study in Vejle, Denmark provides a social connection to the waterfront. The variety of uses - allotments, event stages, and gardens will provide a strong, accessible relationship. This will be a social benefit to the regeneration scheme.

Boat Resturants

The restaurant boats will contribute to Newham's identity and cultural regeneration. Communities can provide food and dishes here, working with a theme for each week. This unique strategy will empathise with Newham's diversity of cultures and this happening will bring both the community and people of London together to enjoy. This contributes to culture-led regeneration.

Local Jobs and Equality

We aim to implement employment mechanisms, as used in the London Olympics construction project that ensures local people are prioritised and treated equally and ensure local benefits and opportunity.

Mixed-Use Infrastructure

The inclusion of mixed-use units relates to post-covid and the 15min city concept, but also makes the site more resilient. This will enhance 24hr activation and liveliness of the site, something that is missed currently. This is a community benefit as it will make the area feel safer.

Case Study: Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf Group PLC generates support for local businesses. The closing of the docks spiked unemployment and low economic circulation. The group itself is a developer, but they believe in empowering the community for sustainable and local benefit. The group has generated 1 billion for local companies, of which 1700 local businesses have benefited from this joint venture. This group accommodates small and medium enterprises from estates and surrounding communities. Their area of focus is East London, and their legacy hopes to lessen the high levels of deprivation and poverty.
